Fashion Design Certificate Program

This is not fashion school in the abstract. Over 15 months and four 15-week modules, you move through the full pipeline of fashion — from creative research and illustration through pattern making, draping, and sewing, into CLO-3D digital design, sample room production, collection design, portfolio building, marketing, and entrepreneurship. You graduate with a state-licensed credential, an industry-ready portfolio, real freelance experience, and a community of designers and creative professionals behind you. What You'll Learn

The program is structured as four modules, each 15 weeks long. They build on one another, so by the time you reach your collection you've already mastered the craft underneath it.

Module 1 — Foundations: Illustration, Pattern Making & Draping You start at the source — translating ideas onto paper and into fabric. Fashion illustration sharpens how you see and communicate design. Pattern making teaches you the architecture beneath every garment. Draping puts fabric on a form so you understand shape, volume, and movement by hand. This is where your design vocabulary begins, and where you start building the tactile craft that online-only courses can't teach.

Module 2 — Construction: Sewing, Production & the Sample RoomYou move from concept to construction. Sewing technique, production logic, and time in a real sample room teach you how garments are actually made — not in theory, but on industrial equipment, to industry standards. This is the hands-on training that separates a credentialed designer from someone who's only watched tutorials.

Module 3 — Digital & Collection: CLO-3D, Collection Design & Portfolio You bridge analogue and digital. CLO-3D brings your designs into a professional digital environment — the same tool used at major fashion houses. Then you begin building your collection: developing a cohesive body of work that expresses your point of view as a designer, and shaping it into a portfolio that's ready to show.

Module 4 — Launch: Marketing, Entrepreneurship & Freelance Practice You learn the business of being a designer. Marketing, brand-building, freelance practice, and entrepreneurship — taught with the directness of someone who has spent decades in the industry. You leave knowing how to pitch a collection, take on freelance work, price your craft, and launch a brand of your own.

Pattern Making Certificate Program

Description: This hands-on program develops technical skills in pattern drafting, draping, fitting, and garment construction. Students learn to translate design ideas into accurate patterns, develop garment shapes, evaluate fit, and refine construction through sample making. Coursework includes CLO 3D, technical design, tailoring, couture draping, and couture tailoring, emphasizing precision, proportion, structure, and finish.

Objective: Prepare students to develop and adjust patterns, resolve fitting challenges, and communicate garment specifications clearly. Graduates build a technical foundation for work in patternmaking, sample development, technical design, and custom garment production, or for establishing an independent business.

•  Fall 2026 cohort:  September 1st – December 22nd, 2026

•  Winter 2027 cohort: January 5 – April 18, 2027

Can I work or parent while in the program? Yes — the program is purpose-built for ambitious adults, many of whom are balancing jobs and family. The 15-month structure with 15-week modules keeps the rhythm predictable, and the Online Pattern Making Certificate offers flexible online, hybrid, and in-person options. We respect your time, and we've designed the schedule around the reality of adult life.

Is the program state-licensed and recognized? Yes. RED Fashion School is Connecticut's first state-licensed Fashion Design Certificate Program. That credential matters — it signals a level of rigor and oversight that unaccredited online courses can't match, and it's recognized by employers and institutions that care about where your training came from.

What financial aid and payment plans are available? Total program tuition is for Fashion Design Certificate is $26,325 and for pattern making certificate is $14,768.50. A $2,000 holding fee secures your place in a cohort, and from there you can pay term-by-term rather than upfront in full — payment plans are available so the cost spreads across the program instead of landing all at once. Scholarships are also available, and we encourage every prospective student to explore the funding resources listed on our tuition page. The online Fashion Design and Pattern Making Certificate are focused credential in pattern making specifically, taught by a live instructor and offered in online, hybrid, or in-person formats. It's ideal if you want to build a specific skill, study from a distance, or start with pattern making before committing to the full program.
